If you’re shopping around for new shades, honeycomb/cellular shades are a type of product you’ve certainly come across. If you aren’t familiar with this type of blind, you may be wondering whether or not they’re right for your home and your needs. Well, you’ve landed on the right blog. Read on to discover more about the pros and cons of honeycomb shades and find out whether or not they deserve a spot in your home.
The Pros of Honeycomb Shades
We always start with the pros, right? We can’t help it because we actually really do love our honeycomb shades and so do our customers. Honeycombs are the number one selling window treatment for us and there are plenty of reasons why. Here’s a brief look into what makes honeycomb/cellular shades a homerun in our books.
One of the best selling points about honeycomb/cellular shades is that they are energy efficient. The unique honeycomb design traps air inside so the inside air doesn’t escape and outside air doesn’t seep in. This means that your windows are well insulated so they can help keep your home cool in summer and warmer in winter without you having to spend more on energy bills. If you have a drafty window or a window that gets too much sunlight and overheats your home in summer, you’ll find honeycomb shades very practical all year round.
Light Control Options
Honeycombs are very versatile. You can choose light filtering fabrics for areas where you want to maximize sunlight and you can go with blackout fabrics for rooms you’ll need privacy in. Blackout cellular shades can block light and outside noise, allowing for better sleep. If you need a bit of both, you’ll love our new Two-Fabric Honeycomb Shades. You can just lift up or down to go from light filtering to blackout in a snap!
Even our light filtering fabrics can offer privacy. You can benefit from the sunshine but won’t have to worry about people seeing into your home. This is a major pro if your neighbours are very close to you or if you have a corner home. Your privacy shouldn’t have to come at the expense of natural lighting.
Of all the products we offer, honeycombs come in the most colour options. There is a colour for every style in our collection of honeycombs. From neutrals to bold colours to pastels, there is nothing you won’t find in our honeycomb/cellular shades collections. There are also varying fabric options to suit both your style and your budget.
The Cons of Honeycomb Shades
While we love these products, we know there are some limitations that may not be suitable for your particular needs. Here are a few points that you may want to consider before investing in honeycomb shades.
Blocking the View
While honeycombs offer excellent privacy, they can also obstruct your view of the outside. If your window is on the side of the house or located someplace where you don’t care to see what’s outside, honeycombs are a great choice. However, if you have a large window with a beautiful view of the outdoors, honeycombs may not be the best solution for you in that particular scenario. You can always choose solar shades or sheer shades instead.
More Difficult to Clean
You can clean honeycomb shades with a gentle vacuum or a hair dryer but if you have a very wide blind, it can be tough to reach the dust in the middle. You do have to clean each cell to keep your blinds looking their best so you would either have to find a long, thin extension to get inside each cell or choose narrow shades to avoid the dust accumulation in the middle. You can choose two blinds on one headrail to simplify cleaning.
If you are looking for a modern or edgy, honeycombs may not fit the bill for you. However, it’s worth pointing out that practicality should always be the top factor you keep in mind when shopping for window treatments. If honeycomb/cellular shades don’t match your aesthetic, you can always choose roman shades or other products we offer to check all of your boxes. We have a window covering for everyone!
