Blackout Blinds for Bedroom & Nursery Windows
Blackout shades and blackout blinds are the perfect choice for bedrooms and nurseries, helping you and your kids get a good night’s sleep. It is important to know that inside mounted blackout shades might have a small light gap on the edges of the shade. If you would prefer no light gaps, please consider ordering outside mounted blackout shades. Blackout shades may very well provide you with the most peaceful sleep you can get.
Blackout Blinds for Media Rooms
Blackout shades will give your media room the feel of a real movie theatre and block out most natural light from coming into the room. And you don’t have to worry about glare with blackout blinds. Blackout shades are also the right window covering when you are working on a computer/tablet and prefer to limit outside distractions.
Blackout Liners for Window Coverings
While some window coverings are designed as blackout blinds & shades, others require a blackout liner, which is available as an option for many of our blinds.
Below are just some blackout options to consider:
- Honeycomb/Cellular Blackout Shades: The cell design of these shades provides insulation and noise reduction. These blackout shades help lower your energy costs.

BLACKOUT BLINDS FAQ
What’s the difference between light filtering and blackout blinds? Which should I choose?
Light filtering window shades gently diffuse natural light, allowing a soft glow into your room while still offering privacy - perfect for living rooms, kitchens, or home offices where you want light without glare.
Blackout shades are designed to block out natural light, making them ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms where darkness is key for sleep or screen viewing.
Choose light filtering if you want:
- A bright, airy atmosphere
- Daytime privacy with natural light
Choose blackout if you want:
- Better sleep in dark conditions
- More privacy, glare reduction and light control
What’s the difference between blackout and room darkening shades?
Blackout shades are designed to block out incoming light, making them ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, or media rooms. Room darkening shades reduce light significantly but may still allow more of a glow into your space.
Do blackout blinds block 100% of the light?
While blackout fabrics are fully opaque, light may seep through the sides depending on the type of shade and how it's mounted. For example. inside mounted blackout shades may have light gaps coming into the room from the edges of the shade. We recommend ordering outside mounted blackout shades if you prefer a higher level of blackout. You may also want to layer your shades with blackout drapes for additional light blockage.
If you’re looking for complete darkness, the No-Drill Total Blackout Honeycomb Shades which offer up to full blackout* are the perfect solution. Custom designed to block incoming light, these shades include side & bottom rails to prevent light from seeping into the room around the edges of your window frame.
* After installation, caulk strip tape (or other types of caulking) may be required between the channels and the wall or window frame to prevent light seepage if your window frame is not perfectly rectangular or has any imperfections. Caulking not included.
Should I choose an inside mount or outside mount window shade?
The choice between inside and outside mount depends on your preference. Inside mount fits within the window frame, offering a sleek, flush, built-in look, but may have light gaps on the sides which let some natural light into the room. Outside mounts are installed outside the window frame, covering a larger area and providing better light control and privacy.
