Mount Type - Inside or Outside Mount Refers to the way in which the blind will be hung, either inside or outside the window opening. Inside mount blinds are mounted inside the window frame opening that is recessed from the wall. Outside mount blinds hang outside the window opening on a wood trim, wall or door. Inside mount is by far the most popular mount and provides a nice clean look and finish to your window.

For inside mounts: please make sure to follow the Measuring Instructions on our site; do not make any deductions in your measurements, as our factory will make all necessary deductions to allow for mounting brackets.

Choose how you want your shutter panels configured, including the number of panels and which sides are hinged. The hinged side is where the shutters panel will attach to the frame. Left or Right identifies the side the hinges are located and the side in which that panel opens out toward. Single panels are ideal for smaller widths, while multiple panels are recommended for wider windows. Multiple panels separated with a T-post center support is recommended for extra wide windows.

Louver Size

Louver Size
The size of the louver will determine the amount of light the shines through. The 3 ½” louver is the traditional choice. The 2 ½” louver is commonly used for shallower window frames while the 4 ½” is used for deeper window frames and when more visibility to the outside is desired.
Tilt Type

Front tilt is the traditional tilt type for shutters. A hidden rear tilt will move the bar to the back and side. This will provide a clean, streamlined look. To tilt the shutters, simply move one louver and the rest will follow.
Number of Frame Sides

4 sided frame is for traditional rectangular windows and can be inside or outside mounted. 4 sided with sill frame is for windows with a bottom sill that protrudes or extends out from the wall. If you have a window sill, you must choose the 4 sided with sill frame option or your shutters may not be able to be installed.

For inside mounted shutters with No Frame, mounting strips are recommended for ease of installation and to help distribute the weight of shutter panels. The strips are used in conjunction with adjustable hinges attached to the inside of the panel. Mounting strips help block extra light from side gaps and are not visible when shutter panels are closed.

L-Frame is recommended for windows with existing trim and flush application when inside mounted. A T-Frame or Bullnose frame is recommended on windows with no existing trim or out of square windows to eliminate light gaps. A Casing Frame is outside mounted and will add a decorative trim to your windows. No frame is if you would like a panel and no framing.
Dividing Rail

Dividing Rail
Divider rails add strength to the panel and allow you to operate the top louvers independently from the bottom louvers. For example, the lower section of louvers can be closed to provide privacy while the upper section remains open to allow for an outside view.

While the most common placement of a divider rail is in the exact center of the panel or at a natural break, you are able to specify how high you want your divider rail to be from the bottom of the shutter. (Measurement for the divider rail will be to the center +/- allowance)

These shutters are available in multiple panel configurations in 2 1/2", 3 1/2", and 4 1/2" louver sizes, so you can customize how much light and warmth comes into the room. Choose a smaller louver size for smaller windows or those with less depth, or a larger louver size for an expansive view with your larger windows.

Recommendations and Limitations

  • L-Frame & Casing Frame shutters made 1/8" smaller than ordered width and height on an inside mount.
  • Bullnose & T-Frame shutters made 3/8" smaller than ordered width and height with no sill, and 1/4" smaller than ordered height with sill frame selected on an inside mount.
  • Deductions may vary +/- 1/8".
  • L-Frame shutters come with cover strips included, for light gap coverage. 
  • 36" maximum width for a single panel.
  • Pre-drilled installation holes are strategically placed on all frames for accurate, quick and clean installation. Some assembly is required.
  • For panels over 66 inches in height, a dividing rail is required. For bi-folding panels over 50 inches in height, a dividing rail is required.
  • No Frame Sides shutters will arrive with panels and attached hinges only. Due to the weight of shutter, No Frame is not recommended for larger sizes to ensure a sturdy mount.

Measuring Considerations

  • There will be sizable light gaps when ordering L-Frame for inside mount applications on windows with no existing molding. We suggest choosing the T-Frame.
  • To avoid excess louver overlap, a minimum of 18" is required between divider rail and the top/bottom rail of the shutter.
  • Outside mounted shutters will arrive at ordered width and height. Frame additions are necessary to properly clear window opening and allow for shutter installation.
  • When ordering adjacent shutters in the same room, to achieve a uniform appearance you must specify that all adjacent shutters and their divider rails be the same height. If the measurements of the shutters differ slightly, apply one of the following three options (keeping in mind that adjacent shutters and their divider rails must always be ordered exactly the same height):
    • For outside mounts, increase the ordered height of the smaller shutters to equal the taller shutters.
    • For inside mounts, reduce the ordered height of the taller shutters to equal the smaller shutters.
    • For inside mounts with height differences of 1/2" or more, change to an outside mount.
