Drapery & Curtains

Not sure if you want to buy curtains and drapes online? Trust us – we’ve made the process as smooth and seamless as possible. Start by ordering free sample of your favourite colours and patterns so you can see how they look and feel in person. With our easy measuring guide, taking measurements is a snap! To help you find the perfect custom curtains, here are some tips to keep in mind:

What to Look for When Buying Curtains?

Choosing the right curtains is easy to do once you’ve narrowed down exactly what you need. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you start browsing drapes.

What Are Your Needs?

If you’re looking to add a glamorous finish to your room by layering exquisite drapes over your window blinds or shades, you’ll want to consider what your needs are in the room first. If you need the drapes to block out light, you may want to consider a blackout fabric. If you just want to highlight the window area, sheer curtains are ideal.

Stand Out or Blend In?

Next, you’ll want to decide on the motif. We have bold and striking patterns for a show-stopping look. If your room already has a main focal point, you can always choose from our luxe neutral fabrics for an understated yet elegant look instead.

What is the Best Length for Curtains?

When it comes to custom curtains, there are three different curtain lengths to choose from:

  • Apron Curtains: Drapes that reach down to about 4” inches below the bottom of the window frame.
  • Floor Length Curtains: Drapes that lightly graze the floor and are usually only about one-quarter of an inch above it.
  • Puddle Length Curtains: Curtains that are intentionally too long and puddle together on the floor.

The best length for your curtains will largely depend on where they are and what your preferences are. In a room like the kitchen, you may want to keep your curtains shorter to avoid getting them dirty. In a living room, you may want floor-length or puddle-length for effect.

Should Curtains Be Lighter or Darker than Walls?

In the world of interior design, curtains can be either lighter or darker – as long as there is some type of contrast. Aim for custom-made curtains that contrast with the wall rather than match it perfectly. This can make both the drapes and the wall appear dull. The contrast will brighten the room and call even more attention to the curtains you’ve chosen.

What Widths Do Curtains Come In?

The beauty of custom-made curtains is that you can choose the exact right width for you. Most  of our drape panels can be made as wide as 96” each, with some models available as wide as 196”. Ideally, you want two curtain panels for a standard window.

Both panels together should measure one a half times the width of the entire window to allow you to gather them beautifully on each side and frame the window. If you intend to fully shut the curtains at times, then you’ll want the combined width to be two and half times the width of the window.

Most Popular Curtain Customizations

There are a few customizable features on drapes to consider when choosing the perfect ones for your interior design project. Here are some of our most popular features:

  • Grommet: This style is when the material has metal rings woven into the fabric at the top. It allows the material to slide onto the curtain rod easily and also exposes it a little bit.
  • Pleated: This style will expose the curtain rod completely, while the material is gathered into sections and is attached to the rod by decorative rings in the colour and finish of your choosing. If you plan to have the curtain drape over the frame of the window, this style works best.
  • Tie Backs: These are matching pieces of your custom made curtains that you can use to gather your drapes on the side and move them away from the centre.
  • Liners: You can add a privacy liner if you want light filtering through while maintaining privacy. Or you can choose a blackout liner if you want to completely block light from entering the room.
  • Rods: Choose from Antique Brass, Oil Rubbed Bronze or Satin Nickel to match your new custom drapery to your room, no matter what style or colour scheme you’re working with.

How Do I Hang Curtains?

If you buy drapes online, the next step is to hang them up yourself and we promise, this part is easy! You’ll need to screw in a curtain rod anywhere from three to four inches above the window frame. Then hang your brand new drapes and voilà!

Why Buy Curtains?

Adding drapes to your window blinds for a layered effect can instantly give your space a more elegant vibe. Layering various materials and textures can also brighten up your room and make your windows stand out.

You can also customize your space even further by choosing details like grommet or pleated style curtains, tie backs, or combining both thick and sheer materials together for a look that is home décor magazine-worthy.

DRAPES/CURTAINS FAQ

What’s the difference between curtains and drapes?

The main difference between curtains and drapes is the fabric and structure. Curtains are usually lighter, made from softer materials, and are perfect for letting in natural light. Drapes tend to be heavier and are often lined, making them ideal for blocking out light and providing extra insulation. At Select Blinds Canada, both are available in styles that fit your needs, whether you’re after light-filtering elegance or a cozy, darkened room.

Can curtains or drapes block out light completely?

If you’re looking to block out light, we recommend adding the optional blackout liner. This will keep your room dark, making them perfect for bedrooms or home theaters. If you still want some light but would like a little more privacy, we recommend adding a standard liner.

Do curtains or drapes provide privacy?

If privacy is a priority, we have a wide range of thicker or more opaque fabrics from which to choose. You can also add a standard or blackout liner for increased privacy.

Can I use curtains or drapes for insulation?

Absolutely! Our drapes, especially those with the optional thermal line, do a great job of insulating your space. They help keep the warmth in during the winter and the heat out during the summer, which means your home stays cozy and your energy bills stay low.

Do you offer eco-friendly curtains or drapes?

Yes, we do! We’re committed to offering sustainable products, and our Eco Living Drapes/Curtains are made from eco-friendly, recycled materials. So you can feel good about your purchase while also doing your part to help the environment. It’s all about creating beautiful spaces and a healthier planet.

What’s are the different fold styles for curtains and drapes?

Select Blinds Canada offers three fold styles to help give your room a unique look:

  • Grommet: These have a modern, sleek style with metal rings at the top. The grommets create clean, uniform pleats and allow for smooth opening and closing.
  • Wave Fold: This style has a soft, flowing look with evenly spaced waves, creating a more contemporary and relaxed feel. The wave fold is perfect if you want a more uniform, stylish drape.
  • Pleated: These offer a more traditional, structured look with crisp pleats that add texture and elegance to your room. Pleats are great for a classic, formal appearance.

Not sure which one suits your space? Our Design Consultants can help you choose the style that works best for your room.

Do you offer motorized curtains and drapes?

Yes, we do! Our motorized curtains and drapes give you the ultimate in convenience and luxury. With just the push of a button, you can easily open and close your curtains.

How do I choose the right style of curtains or drapes for my room?

Choosing the right style comes down to the vibe you want. For a light, airy feel, opt for soft linen or cotton curtains. If you’re after a more formal look, drapes with a rich, textured fabric might be your best bet. Need help deciding? One of our Design Consultants can help you pick the perfect drapes based on your space and needs. You can also order free swatches of all curtain and drape fabrics to help you make the right decision.

Can I layer drapes with other window treatments?

Absolutely! Layering drapes with other window treatments is a great way to create a stylish look with added depth. For example, you can pair your curtains or shades with roller shades, flat roman shades or woven wood shades. Select Blinds Canada has plenty of options to help you achieve the perfect look for your home. Need some inspiration or help? Our Design Consultants are here to guide you.

Do you offer custom-made curtains or drapes?

Yes. All of our curtains and drapes are made to your exact measurement and style. At Select Blinds Canada, we understand that every home is unique. That's why we offer custom-made curtains and drapes in a wide selection of fabrics, colours & patterns, fold styles and sizes to fit your space perfectly.

How much do curtains and drapes cost?

Since all of the window treatments at Select Blinds Canada are made to your exact measurements and specifications, the price depends on several factors including the width and height, the type of fabric, and the addition of optional features such as motorization.

How do I measure my windows for curtains or drapes?

Measuring is simple! To get a perfect fit:

  • Width:
    • If you have a pole/rod or track: Measure the curtain track or pole/rod width. For drapery poles/rods, measure the distance between the finials (the decorative ends of the drapery rod). For curtain tracks, simply measure the total length of the track.
    • If you do not yet have a rod or track: Measure the width of your window, including the window frame. We recommend that you add between 4”-8” allowance to each side to create the effect of a wider window.
  • Height:
    • Grommet: Measure from the top of the rod to the bottom where you would like the drape to end, while also taking into consideration the 1” of fabric above the grommets. The finished panel length you provide will be the exact measurement to which the drapery panel will be made.
    • Wave Fold: Measure from the top of the track to where the curtain should finish at the bottom (e.g. ½” off the floor).
    • Pleated: Measure from the underside of the decorative ring to where you want the curtain to finish at the bottom.

How long will it take to ship my curtains or drapes?

Most of our custom curtains ship 5-7 days from date of order. You can check the specific up-to-date delivery timing on each product page.

How do I clean curtains and drapes?

Gently vacuum your drapes with a brush attachment to remove dust. For stains, use a damp cloth with mild detergent and gently dab the affected area. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first. Avoid rubbing vigorously to prevent damage to the fabric.
