As the Social Media Manager for Select Blinds Canada, I\u2019ve had the opportunity to work with a ton of amazing influencers across Canada. In working on collaborations with design experts from all around the country, I\u2019ve managed to pick up some handy design tips for my own home.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, it also means I started to realize that so many areas of my home needed work. Keep reading to find out how I managed to completely modernize my master bedroom in this makeover project, just by updating my window coverings.<\/p>\n

The D\u00e9cor Problems in My Master Bedroom<\/h2>\n

The first thing I have learned is that drapery should be hung as close to the ceiling as possible, far above the window frame instead of directly above it. This is because drapes hung higher up give the illusion of length and they add to the sophisticated look you expect from custom draperies.<\/p>\n

When we moved into our new build 13 years ago, I immediately chose a \u201ctemporary\u201d set of pre-made drapes to fill the space until I found the right ones. And those nasty drapes stayed put for over a decade \u2013 not exactly part of the plan. I hung them right above the window frame and they were still a solid inch above the floor. This didn\u2019t create the elegant space I wanted.<\/p>\n

The next problem we had was that our blackout was really not great. I am easily disturbed by early morning sunshine and I figured there just wasn\u2019t a better way to do it. If you watch the video, you\u2019ll see many light gaps.<\/p>\n

How I Solved the Problem<\/h2>\n

The first thing I did was remove my non-compliant and broken faux wood blinds and install our Double Zebra Shades<\/a> instead. These were really ideal for me because they are two blinds in one. The zebra shades let in so much light and they look fantastic. At night, the separate blackout shade comes down to add instant privacy. It\u2019s really the best of both worlds in one product.<\/p>\n

I also opted for the motorized version and I am so glad I did. It\u2019s really convenient, easy to operate, and it keeps our hands off the blinds, minimizing potential damage to the beautiful fabric.<\/p>\n

The next thing I did was layer my new shades with our Boucl\u00e9 Drapes<\/a> and all I can say is WOW! The fabric is so luxurious and trust me when I say, customized length is so worth it. I added a blackout fabric to the drapes to cover up the light gaps. Let me explain\u2026<\/p>\n

What Are Light Gaps and How Do You Get Rid of Them?<\/h2>\n

Light gaps mean there is still some light coming in from the sides of the shades. I have an inner mount and the shades need to be a little narrower than the frame to avoid fraying the material when you draw them up and down. But it creates a slight halo effect around the shade. For most people, this is fine, but I might be a vampire so I need even more blockage!<\/p>\n

The drapes cover up the light gaps so I have ultimate blackout. For me, this is priceless. Maybe one day my children will learn to sleep in past 7:00 a.m. and I can actually enjoy sleeping in. If you\u2019re a shift worker, you\u2019ll definitely be able to sleep any time of the day with this kind of blackout.<\/p>\n

The Finished Look<\/h2>\n

Overall, I am very happy with the amazing blackout and the gorgeous style. The higher-hung drapes and modern shades really updated the entire look and feel of master bedroom. The daylight that comes in is perfect for applying my makeup without any additional lighting needed. Then I can quickly get blackout when it\u2019s time for some shut-eye.<\/p>\n

Everyone who has been to our house adores the new look and asks me which products I used so they can do the same at their house. The fabrics, textures, and functionality have upgraded my entire space. I was actually contemplating new furniture at some point but now that my new, elegant window coverings are in, the space is updated just enough \u2013 so I can save the furniture money!<\/p>\n
