How To Adjust The Tension On Your Spring Roller Shades

Roller blind brakets, spring and free turning pinA spring roller shade is basically a coiled spring inside a hollow tube, usually made of aluminum, wrapped in the shade. The tension on the spring controls the lift.

When you pull down on the shade itself, you increase the tension on the spring. At whatever point you stop pulling, the tension is held on one end of the aluminum tube by a ratchet and a pin. A free turning pin that fits into the bracket is located at the other end of the tube, helping it move with ease.

Usually there are no problems in shipping, but it can happen that the spring uncoils, in which case your roller shades will not function properly. This is easy to fix by adjusting the spring. Try the following tips to troubleshoot a spring roll shade that isn't working:

How to increase the tension of the spring:

  1. First pull the shade half way down.
  2. Next take the roller shade down from the window.
  3. Then roll the shade manually. Make sure that it is rolled evenly and tightly all the way along.
  4. Now put the roller shade back up in its brackets.
  5. It at first you don't succeed, try again. It sometimes takes two or three tries.

How to decrease the tension of the spring:

  1. First roll up the all the way up shade. If there is too much tension, this won't be a problem.
  2. Next take the roller shade down from the window.
  3. Then unroll the shade manually half way.
  4. Replace the roller shade in the brackets.
  5. Repeat if necessary until the tension is ok.

How to adjust a fully uncoiled spring:

  1. First take the roller shade down from the window.
  2. Then manually unroll the shade half way.
  3. Next find the pin on the spring end of the shade and pull it with a pair of pliers until you feel some tension, then let it go so that the latch snaps into the ratchet.
  4. Now you can increase or decrease the tension of the spring using the directions above.

How to fix a spring that is completely stuck in the coil:

  1. First take the roller shade down from the window.
  2. Next find the pin on the spring end of the shade and twist it clockwise with a pair of pliers to free the latch.
  3. Now release it quickly to free the coil from the spring.
  4. Now you can increase or decrease the tension of the spring using the directions above
